West of Notting Hill Gate the ground climbs through Pembridge Road and Kensington Park Road towards Ladbroke Grove, with Westbourne Grove cutting east to west through the shopping heart of it. Pastel terraces, communal gardens behind them that are private and unusually large, and a general looseness the stucco squares to the south never manage. Passengers here are typically residents, families, and visitors who have taken a house for the week rather than a hotel room.
Narrow residential streets, permit bays down both sides, and a skip or a delivery van blocking things more often than not, which is why a large vehicle seldom suits a doorstep collection. Along much of its length Portobello Road shuts to traffic for the Saturday market, and Golborne Road does the same on Fridays. Over the August bank holiday the carnival closes a very large area for two days, with diversions reaching well past its edges. Notting Hill falls outside the congestion charge zone.
Shopping happens on Westbourne Grove and Ledbury Road, antiques and market stalls on Portobello, restaurants scattered anywhere between Clarendon Cross and Golborne Road. People move about within this district rather than out of it, so a good deal of our work is short local runs and evening journeys east into the West End. Holland Park and Kensington Gardens are both walkable, which leaves the car to earn its keep on the longer legs.
What a W11 address really buys you is the Westway. Heathrow comes to 30 to 55 minutes, faster than almost any other central London postcode, and the M40 for Oxford and the Cotswolds opens up without touching the West End at all. Gatwick is the awkward one, 70 to 110 minutes. Luton generally takes 50 to 85 minutes. For a Friday evening escape westwards, few starting points in London beat Notting Hill.

Terraces, gardens and closures
Shape in this corner of W11 comes from the Ladbroke Estate. Its crescents, Lansdowne, Elgin, Blenheim and Stanley, bend around communal gardens that are gated, private and reached on foot alone through a residents' entrance, so your doorstep is always a street address and never a garden one. Narrow, humped, and lined with permit bays down both sides, that is what those crescents are. A saloon handles them without fuss; a long-wheelbase vehicle often cannot get round.
Few through routes exist here, and none of them forgives much. Notting Hill Gate and Holland Park Avenue make up the main east-west artery, with nowhere realistic along either to pull in. Ladbroke Grove heads north beneath the elevated road towards Kensal. Crosstown traffic goes by way of Chepstow Villas, Colville Terrace and Talbot Road, at twenty miles an hour over the humps. Loading restrictions apply on Westbourne Grove and Ledbury Road through the day, and those, rather than your preference, settle where the shopping goes into the boot.
Two disruptions sit in the local calendar, one routine and one on another scale altogether. Saturday goes to the market; from mid-morning until late afternoon the streets around Portobello will not take a car, and the effect bleeds several blocks out on either side. Then the August bank holiday, which is something else entirely: a wide closure, barriers that move, and restrictions lingering on the days around it. Calm otherwise, W11, with Sunday mornings among the easiest driving you will find anywhere in inner London.

Secure Carnival weekend early, because it is the one date that will not wait. A car promised elsewhere over that bank holiday cannot be called back, and the Friday and Tuesday either side feel it too. Saturdays stay busy all year thanks to the market. School-run windows on Holland Park Avenue and Ladbroke Grove are best sidestepped altogether if your timing bends at all.
Short notice goes down more easily here than in most parts of London, midweek and on Sunday above all. Friday afternoons pointing west are where that falls apart, as everyone with a house past the M25 sets off in the same hour. Give us the address itself rather than the postcode alone, and the vehicle gets matched to the street before a thing is confirmed. That saves an awkward conversation at the kerb.
