Names are only half the story. Concord, Fatfield, Usworth and all the rest carry numbers too, and satellite navigation will happily deposit a driver at the edge of the correct estate rather than at your door. So the road name and a landmark get confirmed before the day, above all for an early departure, when nobody wants to be circling around in the dark. The Sunderland Highway and its roundabouts move quickly and look very much alike; knowing which exit is which is a local skill, not a map-reading one.

A same-day return to London is the sort of plan that reads perfectly well on a Tuesday and feels altogether different by eleven at night. Five to six hours each way on the road will do that. Since there is no station here, plenty of Washington journeys run properly door to door, the long ones included, so the alternative we usually put forward is a chauffeur across to Durham or to Newcastle, an East Coast service from there, and a second car meeting the train when it arrives.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
