On the peninsula you find the old Thames Tunnel, the church and the pub down by the river, and a great deal of dock-era housing either converted or rebuilt around the basins that survive. Quiet, too, in a way that startles anybody this near the City. Residents travel for work over the river, for flights out of the eastern airports, and for weekends away that begin uncomfortably early on a Friday.
Practically speaking, Lower Road and Salter Road make the circuit, and nearly every address opens off one or the other. Plenty of the wharf conversions come with gated forecourts or underground parking behind a height barrier, so we ask which entrance actually works before a car is dispatched. By St Mary's church the streets are narrow with almost no parking and no room to linger, so we set down on Railway Avenue and wait close by.
Nearest of all is London City, about 25 to 45 minutes away, taken through the Rotherhithe Tunnel and along the Highway, or by Canada Water and the Limehouse Link. Put Gatwick at 55 to 90 minutes. Reaching the West End takes 25 to 45 minutes, ordinarily over Tower Bridge and along the Embankment. Should a charge fall on any leg of the journey, it already sits inside the price you are quoted.

One peninsula, three ways out
Narrow, limited to smaller vehicles and shut far more often than anybody expects, the Rotherhithe Tunnel never gets to carry a schedule on its own. Two dependable alternatives exist: Lower Road towards the Bricklayers Arms, and the A200 running west to Tower Bridge. Both slow between eight and nine. Set off early, though, and the Jamaica Road route is clear and quick before seven, which happens to be when most of our airport work around here starts.
New development around Canada Water has redrawn the road layout, and a number of older through routes now carry access-only signs. Salter Road loops right round the peninsula and remains the dependable way about when a section shuts. Weekend traffic bound for the shopping centre and the leisure centre packs Surrey Quays Road by late morning; the riverside streets stay quiet through all of it, which makes them a far better meeting place on a Saturday.

Two windows reshape a schedule: weekday mornings heading into the centre, and the long crawl outward from four until seven. Our quoted timings reflect those, not what a mapping application shows on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends open up considerably by comparison. Airport legs are the ones most worth padding.
