Three routes leave Abbey Wood in practice. Eastern Way, the A2016, heads west for Plumstead and Woolwich, east for Erith and the Bronze Age Way; it flows well off-peak but stiffens badly at the Plumstead end whenever the ferry queue backs up. Slower and less pleasant is the A206 through Plumstead High Street, though it forgives you on a morning when Eastern Way is jammed. Going south, Knee Hill and Bostall Hill climb steeply to Welling, and that is the line we take for the A2, for Kent, for the M25.

For a very early departure to London City, our preference is the Woolwich Ferry, a short hop that tends to be calm before seven, though it works to a published timetable and does get suspended now and then for weather, tides or maintenance. Once the morning is properly under way, the queue at the slipway makes the Blackwall Tunnel safer despite the extra miles, with the Silvertown Tunnel running alongside as the alternative. Any crossing charge that applies sits inside the quotation and is settled by us.

Traffic in London is predictable enough to plan around, and far too variable to ignore. Two windows reshape a schedule: weekday mornings heading into the centre, and the long crawl outward from four until seven. Our quoted timings reflect those, not what a mapping application shows on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends open up considerably by comparison. Airport legs are the ones most worth padding.
