Everything in Paddington is built round the station, Praed Street on one side and Eastbourne Terrace on the other, the hospital opposite, and the hotels of Sussex Gardens, Craven Road and Norfolk Square packing the streets about it. North of the tracks, Paddington Basin and Merchant Square hold offices and waterside restaurants, with Little Venice a few minutes further on where the canals meet. Passengers are travellers, business visitors, and people off the Elizabeth line who would rather not continue by tube.

Set-down arrangements at the station are tight, and the taxi rank takes no private cars, so meetings happen on Eastbourne Terrace, on London Street, or in the streets behind Praed Street, whichever entrance suits you. Bishop's Bridge Road and the Westway approaches run fast and offer nowhere at all to stop. Bays exist on Sussex Gardens, though they fill early in the day. Paddington sits just outside the congestion charge zone, the boundary following the Edgware Road a few hundred metres east.

Arrivals and departures account for nearly everything we do around here. There is the family stepping off a train under a pile of luggage who need taking on to a rented house. There is the hotel guest wanting collecting for an early flight. There is the business visitor shuttling from Merchant Square to a meeting in the City. On top of that, evening work comes out of Little Venice and the canalside restaurants, and the hospital on Praed Street produces a steady run of appointment journeys.

With the Westway on the doorstep, this ranks among the quicker central postcodes for going west. Heathrow generally takes 35 to 60 minutes, and the M40 for Oxford, Bicester and the Cotswolds opens up within minutes of leaving. Luton comes to 45 to 80 minutes. Gatwick is the difficult one, 65 to 105 minutes right across town. St Pancras for the Eurostar lies ten to twenty minutes east along the Marylebone Road.
