Waterloo has exits at the Victory Arch, onto Waterloo Road, down to Mepham Street and through towards the South Bank, and they put you in four different places. For a car, Mepham Street under the arches is the closest reliable standing point, with Sandell Street and Alaska Street a little further. Waterloo East is a separate station reached from Sandell Street or the walkway, which catches people out when they are booking a collection.

Lower Marsh trades as a street market on weekdays and the carriageway narrows accordingly through the middle of the day, so we approach from Baylis Road rather than through it. The Old Vic at the corner of The Cut empties a little after ten on performance nights, and a collection at the theatre door is slower than one fifty metres along Waterloo Road. Weekend engineering work sometimes changes the taxi and bus arrangements at the front of the station.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore. Weekday mornings into the centre and the long crawl outward from four until seven are the two windows that reshape a schedule, and we quote timings that reflect them rather than a mapping application on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season. For those, book when the date is set rather than when the week finally arrives.
