Where the Elizabeth line, Thameslink and three Underground lines converge you get this station, and a once quiet edge of the City has become a serious interchange because of it. Round about stand Smithfield's market buildings, the Charterhouse, the Clerkenwell studios up to the north, and newer offices ranged along Farringdon Road. Plenty of our work here is meeting people off trains, among them passengers who have come in by rail from Heathrow and Gatwick and want a car for the last leg.
Outside the main entrance, Cowcross Street goes pedestrian at its eastern end and carries a lot of foot traffic, which rules it out for waiting. Alongside the western entrance, Turnmill Street handles a brief set-down, while Farringdon Road and Charterhouse Street each put a legal bay within a minute. The Barbican-side exit is served by Long Lane. Farringdon sits inside the charging zone, and at the evening peak Farringdon Road seizes up around Holborn Viaduct.
Eastbound to London City, allow 30 to 50 minutes. Heathrow by road usually asks 55 to 95 minutes, but out of Farringdon the Elizabeth line often makes the quicker half of a journey, and meeting you at either end of it suits us fine. Gatwick sits nearer 70 to 110 minutes. St Pancras is 5 to 15 minutes off, which turns this into a natural handover point ahead of a Eurostar departure.

Station exits and Smithfield hours
This station has several front doors, and they stand nowhere near each other. Most people mean the Cowcross Street entrance when they say Farringdon. The Elizabeth line's eastern exit puts you out on Long Lane, several hundred metres off, and the Thameslink platforms have access of their own. Say which line brings you in and we will be at the right door. Through the evening peak, Turnmill Street is usually easier to reach than anything over on the Charterhouse Street side.
Smithfield keeps working through the small hours, and from about midnight the lorries serving it run along Charterhouse Street and West Smithfield, which leaves the early morning busy and yet oddly easy to drive. Just north of that, Charterhouse Square is gated and private. Have a very early airport departure and you are in one of the few central districts where a four o'clock collection presents no difficulty at all. For that we usually suggest the Charterhouse Street side.
