Full trading at the market runs midweek through to Saturday, and Saturday beats the rest by a long way: Stoney Street, Bedale Street and Winchester Walk pack out from mid-morning, while traders' vehicles claim the kerbs round about from very early on. Those days we collect from Southwark Street, or from the Bermondsey end of Snowsfields, instead of trying the market lanes. Come earlier in the week and the very same streets stay calm enough to reach the cathedral door.

Guy's Hospital opens onto Great Maze Pond and St Thomas Street, both narrow, both thick with ambulances, so we set down wherever the hospital's own signage sends us and hold near Snowsfields. Theatre audiences at the Bridge and the Globe pour towards the river somewhere between ten and half past, stiffening the approaches to London Bridge for twenty minutes or thereabouts. Meeting the car a couple of streets inland gets you away faster than waiting at the door.
