Heading north of the river from Erith, the honest answer is usually the Dartford Crossing rather than the Woolwich Ferry, even with the eastward drive before you turn north. Tunnels carry the northbound traffic, the bridge takes the southbound, and it is the sensible line for Essex, Stansted and the M11. Only for London City does the ferry win, and only early, before a queue forms at the slipway. Any crossing charge on your route is included in the quotation.

Traffic in London is predictable enough to plan around, and far too variable to ignore.
