Below the A2 you find the settled, green half: Sidcup, Blackfen, Bexley Village, Barnehurst, wide grass verges and interwar houses tucked back behind their hedges. Cross to the north and everything changes. Erith, Slade Green and Belvedere are river towns with working industry along the Thames, and Thamesmead's estate roads start right at the boundary. Crossing from one end of Bexley to the other means threading the gap between the A2 and the river, and the links are thinner than a map lets on. Bexley Road, Erith Road and Crayford Road take nearly all of it, and each pinches in exactly where it is busiest. Along the Thames Road corridor through Crayford and Slade Green, lorries serving the industrial estates build up from about three until five in the afternoon. Get caught there and no detour is a comfortable one.
On Sidcup High Street and Station Road the kerb belongs to short-stay bays that empty and refill all day, so we set down on one of the residential turnings and you walk the last few yards. Queen Mary's Hospital keeps Frognal Avenue busy from morning onwards, and appointment slots come in clumps. Planning around the Dartford Crossing? Northbound queues for the tunnel can start miles back along the A2, and you rarely see them until you are already committed to the approach.
