Stepney Green, the almshouses and the churchyard of St Dunstan's give the district a settled, almost provincial calm, while Commercial Road a few streets south never really stops. Those we drive here include hospital visitors, residents of the Georgian terraces around the Green, and travellers leaving early from the flats along Ben Jonson Road who want the car at the door rather than a walk to the station with cases.
Commercial Road is a red route and unsuited to loading, and the Highway is worse. The residential streets around Stepney Green and Arbour Square take a saloon easily and are where we normally collect. Several of the estates have controlled entrances and speed tables, so we agree the exact meeting point beforehand. The area sits outside the congestion charge zone, and charges applying on a route into town are included in the quotation.
London City is straightforward at 20 to 35 minutes along the A13. Heathrow is 55 to 90 minutes and the Embankment governs the early part of it. Stansted is 45 to 75 minutes by the A11 and A12 up to the M11. For the City of London the drive is short but not always quick, at 15 to 30 minutes, and a good deal more when Aldgate is congested.

Commercial Road, the Highway and the tunnels
There are three ways west out of Stepney and they suit different hours. Commercial Road is the direct one and is dependable before seven and after eight in the evening. The Highway is faster in theory and prone to long stops at the Tower. Cable Street, quieter and slower, is the one we use when the other two are struggling. Your chauffeur reads the conditions on the morning rather than following a fixed line.
Southbound, the Rotherhithe Tunnel entrance is close, but its width and height restrictions rule out anything larger than a saloon, and it closes for maintenance more often than people expect. When it is unavailable, Blackwall by way of the A13 and A12 is the practical alternative, with the Silvertown crossing beside it. For the Royal London Hospital we use the designated drop-off rather than Whitechapel Road itself, which is restricted along almost its entire length and no place to leave a car standing.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day.
