Chrisp Street, the estates ringing All Saints, the newer blocks strung along Aspen Way: walk three streets and the district becomes a different one. Many passengers are Wharf-bound professionals. Others live in the riverside developments, or have booked a hotel here because the DLR is outside, not because of what the address says. Journeys tend to be short and often repeated, and nearly every one of them is set against a deadline that will not shift.
Stopping on Aspen Way is not really an option, since the road moves fast and offers nowhere to pull in, while East India Dock Road is red route with bus lanes on top. Estate roads and hotel forecourts do the work instead. Inside the Wharf we head for the designated set-down points rather than trawling for a spare kerb. Poplar falls outside the congestion charge zone, and if a river crossing or an emissions charge touches your route, that sits in the quotation.
Calling London City a journey is generous when Aspen Way gets you there in 10 to 20 minutes. Heathrow sits at 60 to 95 minutes, and the whole spread turns on the Embankment and the M4. Stansted generally lands at 50 to 80 minutes, via the A12 and M11. Allow 25 to 45 minutes for the West End; what separates the fast version from the slow one is almost always that final mile past the Tower.

Living beside the Blackwall approach
At the eastern edge of Poplar stands the northern portal of the Blackwall Tunnel, and every timing here gets measured against it. Southbound, queues build on the A12 approach right through the middle of the day, and Friday afternoons are the worst of the week. Northbound at breakfast time the tailback can reach inside the tunnel itself. Silvertown crossing alongside has handed us a second option, so on a bad afternoon your chauffeur weighs one against the other instead of committing early.
Canary Wharf runs on private road with managed entrances, and its set-down points are exact places, not rough areas. Those are the ones we use, with your chauffeur parked in a permitted spot close by instead of going round the loop again and again. Dining at one of the restaurants on the water? We will agree the return point when the booking is made. Should Aspen Way go nowhere, Poplar High Street and Cotton Street make quieter local links.

Traffic in London is predictable enough to plan around, and far too variable to ignore. Two windows reshape a schedule: weekday mornings heading into the centre, and the long crawl outward from four until seven. Our quoted timings reflect those, not what a mapping application shows on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends open up considerably by comparison. Airport legs are the ones most worth padding.
Nowhere else in the country holds availability as deep as the capital, which is why short-notice requests frequently work, same day included. Exceptions are the obvious ones. December evenings.
