Just north of here sits the Bow interchange, and it rules the morning outright. Southbound on the A12 towards the Blackwall Tunnel, the queue forms early and holds. The A13 westbound stiffens from around eight and lets go by ten. City meetings after nine we take on the A11 through Bow and Mile End rather than the A13 flyover, and for an airport we would sooner leave before seven than argue with either road.

Then there are the river crossings. Blackwall lies a few minutes off, and the Silvertown crossing next to it has genuinely altered how an afternoon plays out, though at four o'clock on a Friday you would trust neither of them. Bound for Kent or Gatwick, when both tunnels are labouring, we sometimes swing east to the Dartford crossing instead. Stadium events at Stratford put pedestrians all over the station approaches for an hour on either side, which is why a fixture evening sees us collecting from a residential turning and not from the interchange.

Traffic in London is predictable enough to plan around, and far too variable to ignore. Two windows reshape a schedule: weekday mornings heading into the centre, and the long crawl outward from four until seven. Our quoted timings reflect those, not what a mapping application shows on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends open up considerably by comparison. Airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Nowhere else in the country holds availability as deep as the capital, which is why short-notice requests frequently work, same day included. Exceptions are the obvious ones. December evenings. Days carrying a major sporting or state occasion. Any Saturday through the wedding season. On those dates, book once the date is set rather than waiting for the week itself to arrive.
